Knit. Create. Donate.
Love to knit or crochet? Want to put your crafting skills to use for a good cause? Then gather your needles and yarn and come join Knits for Kits (and Pups), a FREE charity knitting club whose express purpose is to create blankets and other cozy items to be donated to animal shelters and animal rescue organizations in the Bay Area.
We have already donated a few beautifully handmade blankets to the Peninsula Humane Society, much to the delight of the cats who received them. Our goal is to knit a blanket for each adoptable cat or dog that can be taken home with the animal when he/she is adopted.
“Knits for Kits” is open to ALL knitters and crocheters.
Are you a whiz with the needles? Great! Just starting out? Fabulous! Come one and come all: make friends, learn to knit / crochet or sharpen your skills, and help homeless animals in the process.
Knits for Kits (and Pups) meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month, from 5-7 PM Please contact us for meeting location, details, and questions.
Behind Knits for Kits:
Knits for Kits (and Pups) was started by Katie Brundage, an English teacher, knitter, and animal lover, in late 2007. A cat "TLC" volunteer at her local branch of the humane society, Katie was always looking for ways to make the shelter kitties more comfortable during their stay. One night Katie was cuddling with her own kitty, Harriet (a humane society rescue), who was sleeping peacefully in a cozy, crochet blanket; Katie observed how Harriet treated the afghan like a "security blanket", curling up in it for comfort and warmth. An avid knitter, crocheter, and all-around crafty (or is it crafts-y?) person, Katie put two and two together and came up with the idea for Knits for Kits (and Pups).
Katie has been thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response from the community and the number of people wanting to get involved with the project. She looks forward to many more months of knitting, crocheting, and reaching the project's goal: one blanket for each animal.
When Katie is not knitting or teaching, she likes spending time with her husband, Ben, and Harriet.
